The Rougarou legend originates from French-Canadian loup-garou (werewolf) mythology brought to Louisiana by Acadian settlers in the 18th century.

According to tradition, a person can become a Rougarou by breaking Lenten fasting rules for seven consecutive years.

Modern sightings describe a creature standing 6–7 feet tall with the body of a man and the head of a wolf or dog, often seen near water.
